What kind of help can the Conservancy
provide to nonprofits?
The Coastal Conservancy can provide
grant money for projects and project management and
can also provide advice about forming and running a
nonprofit.
What sorts of projects does the Coastal
Conservancy fund?
Trails and other public access to
and along the coast, natural resource protection and
enhancement in the coastal zone or affecting coastal
areas, restoration of coastal urban waterfronts, protection
of coastal agricultural land, and resolution of land
use conflicts.
What stages of a project can the Coastal
Conservancy fund?
Pre-project feasibility studies, property
acquisition, planning (for large areas or specific sites),
and design, environmental review, construction, monitoring,
and, in limited circumstances, maintenance.
What amount of funds will the Coastal
Conservancy provide for a given project?
From around $10,000 to several million
dollars, depending on the need, significance, and urgency
of the project and availability of funds.
What nonprofits are eligible to receive
Coastal Conservancy grants?
To be eligible, a nonprofit must be
certified under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States
Internal Revenue Code and must have among its principle
purposes the preservation of land for educational, recreational
and open space opportunities.
How can a nonprofit obtain Coastal
Conservancy project funding or technical assistance?
Just call or send an email to the
appropriate geographic program coordinator (see below)
or, if you’ve previously worked with another staffer,
contact that person. Janet Diehl, the Conservancy's
Nonprofit's Program Manager can help you get started.
Contact her at (510) 286-4164 or jdiehl@scc.ca.gov.
Let us know what you want to accomplish, where, and
what sort or approximate amount of assistance you need.
We’ll work with you to figure out how we can best work
together; that is, if and how the Coastal Conservancy
would be capable of assisting, what funding we might
be able to provide, and how we might be able to help
find additional funding or solve problems. Grants
are subject to approval by the Coastal Conservancy’s
board of appointed decisionmakers, which meets six times
per year.
